The majority of lung cancer nodules are located deep within the lungs in an area full of tight spaces and narrow airways which are often difficult or impossible to access with the traditional bronchoscopes that physicians use. An advanced, minimally invasive procedure called robotic bronchoscopy combines the thin tubes, lights, and cameras of traditional bronchoscopes with robot-assisted technology, allowing physicians to navigate the complex network of airways with greater precision and control.

The robotic bronchoscopy system utilizes a flexible bronchoscope attached to a robotic arm, which is controlled by the physician through a console. Real-time 3D imaging and advanced navigation systems guide the robotic scope with high accuracy, significantly improving the ability to biopsy suspicious areas. 

This technology provides enhanced stability and fine motor control, enabling the physician to access even the smallest, most remote areas of the lungs. The improved visualization and control lead to more effective treatment planning, including targeted therapies.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If you have a lung nodule or mass that shows signs of growth or is otherwise suspicious, you may be eligible for robotic bronchoscopy. 

Before the procedure, you’ll receive instructions on fasting and medication adjustments. On the day of the procedure, you’ll receive sedation or general anesthesia.

Once you’re sedated, the physician will gently guide a flexible bronchoscope attached to a robotic arm into your airways through your nose or mouth. He will then control the robotic system to navigate your lungs, using real-time imaging to reach the target areas. 

Most patients experience little discomfort, and patients are often able to go home the same day. Serious complications are rare.

Note: In order to determine if you’re a candidate for the procedure, your doctor will review your medical history and perform a physical exam to assess your overall health and lung and heart function. He may also conduct blood tests to evaluate kidney function and measure blood-clotting factors, among other tests.
